CHAPTER 14
Suchi called to tell me that she had just started the third year of her course and one of the requisites was a fifteen-week internship with a landscape architecture firm which would expose the student to professional practice. She also had to submit a final internship portfolio, and an internship assessment letter from the person she interned with. Suchi wanted to do it in India, and she had been accepted at an architectural firm in Bangalore which specialised in landscapes. She was going to rent a service apartment for the duration of her stay, and she urged me to visit Bangalore, along with Aryan. When I mentioned it to Manav, he said I should definitely do so, as it would be a nice change for me and all three of us could get together.
âActually both of you can stay with me. It is a large apartment, it has two bedrooms and loads of space,â he said.
But Suchi preferred to stay in the service apartment she had found in Indiranagar, as it was very close to her office. Manav lived in Whitefield, and that would mean a forty-five minute commute for Suchi. Both of them took turns in asking me to come to Bangalore and visit them.
âGod knows when we will get another chance like this, Vee. Come on, it has been so long,â she said and I decided to go.
Suchi met me at the airport when I arrived. I was shocked to see how much weight she had put on since the last time Iâd seen her. She had also dyed her hair a light shade of brown. Aryan had grown so much since she had last seen him, which was when he was only a few weeks old. He had just learnt to run and he was cuteness personified as he tumbled along in that bumbly way that toddlers do.
âOoooooohâjust look at him Vee, isnât he adorable?â she said as she picked him up and kissed him on both cheeks and hugged him tight.
And then she turned towards me. And godâlook at you, Vee. Not a single soul will say youâve given birth to a baby. You have to tell me what you have been doing.â
Ammu aunty is so sweet. I leave Aryan with her while I jog around the whole estate,â I said smiling. It was true. I had started off by walking, and soon my stamina had increased, and I had begun jogging. The pregnancy pounds had quickly dropped off, and I was now lithe and fit.
âGod, in the US everything is so darn large. They donât have any normal sizes for anything. And now look at meâI have become large too. You need to coach me on losing weight, Vee,â she groaned.
It was during that summer internship that Suchi fell in love with Prakash. He was the guy she was interning under, and she declared on day one that he was the most intellectually stimulating guy she had ever met.
The next evening Manav came over, and both of us ribbed Suchi about Prakash.
